arectangular garden plot is 20 m longer than it is wide .calculate the dimensions of the garden if it takes 220 m of fencing to enclose it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x(x + 20) = 220. Solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First we make variables for width and length:\[w=w\]\[l=w+20\]We give width a variable and defined length in terms of it.\[P=2l+2w\]\[P=2(w+20)+2(w)\]Then we take our perimeter function and substitute \(l\) for the version we have in terms of \(w\). \[220=2(w+20)+2(w)\]Then we substitute \(220\) which they told us was the perimeter. Now we can solve for \(w\) and plug it back into our equation for \(l\) to get both length and width.
