substitution is quite easy take the 2nd equation and make x the subject subtract 8y from both sides 2x = 10 - 8y divide each term by 2 x = 5 - 4y substitute into the 1st equation 4( 5 - 4y) + 4y = -1 now you have an equation with one unknown. Just solve for y
