Presumably the altitude is referenced to sea level. Therefore if the party descended 72m they are at an altitude of (72 - 72)m = 0m
When the party stops for a rest they are at an altitude of (72 - 118)m. If the party descends another 55m they are at an altitude of (72 - 118 - 55)m.
Note: a negative result means the party is below sea level.
