Linear equations involve two variables, one dependent and one independent, so in order to solve a linear equaiton you have to arbitrarily choose what the independent variable will be. Ex. y=3x+2, such that x= 2, y=8, in other words you plug in the value of x to find y.

BUT the equation 3x+2=8 would be a multi step equation in ONE variable, and x would, as stated above, equal 2
