what is75% of 50
37.5
which is 50*0.75
Replace "what" with X, replace "%" with รท100, and replace "of" with * (multiplication).
Oh, and replace "is" with = .
The best thing to do, here is first think about it. 100% of 50 is 50. Thus, 75% should be a little less than 50. Whatever you do, if you get 200, you can know for sure that you wandered off.
X = (75/100)(50)
@tkhunny , good estimation tip!
Yall are so confusing. its just .75 multiplied on 50= 37.5. thas it.
Here's a quick way to simplify it: \[\large x=\frac{75}{100}\cdot 50 \rightarrow x=\frac{75}{\cancel{100}2}\cdot \cancel{50}1 \rightarrow x=\frac{75}{2}\]
@jen1511 , but why does that work? What is your explanation for that?
My explanation is, use the damn calculator, and you'll get the correct answer.
How will @christina11 or anyone else know what the proper sequence of keypunches is on a calculator if they don't understand the reasoning behind it?
you dont need to. i just explained what to do. 75% is .75 you multiply that on the original number which is 50. period.
You explained *what to do* for *this single particular problem.* You did not explain *how to do( it in general in a way that can be applied to *any* similar problems. Do you see the difference?
You are not teaching, you are giving mechanical instructions. That's fine for programming robots, but I prefer to educate human minds.
no i was just trying to keep it simple and get straight to what @christina11 asked for in the first place. she asked for an ANSWER not a huge explanation.
You DO have to get into your head this concept: "75% of" = "0.75 *" = "75% *" = "(75/100) *" = "(3/4) *" If you don't have enough experience to flow smoothly between the percentage, the decimal, and the fraction (and maybe the words), you need to back up a little and reinforce that idea. one-half = 1/2 = 0.50 = 50/100 = 50% Practice just to get fluent at it!
