geerky42 (geerky42):

In the figure below, the shaded region is a square of area 3, and △ABC is equilateral. What is the perimeter of △ABC?

geerky42 (geerky42):

|dw:1350957667427:dw|

geerky42 (geerky42):

|dw:1350957758814:dw|so the side of square is √3. so |dw:1350957804930:dw|add them all together and i should get 6√3, right?

geerky42 (geerky42):

am i right?

geerky42 (geerky42):

@lgbasallote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. It's right. I can't see anything wrong.

geerky42 (geerky42):

well, the problem is that it's not one of the multiple choices..

geerky42 (geerky42):

it's multiple choice question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh Let me see.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are the choices?

geerky42 (geerky42):

(A) 3√3 (B) 9√3 (C) 2 + √3 (D) 3 + 6√3 (E) 6 + 3√3

geerky42 (geerky42):

any idea?

geerky42 (geerky42):

wait a min... triangle i drew in square isnt equilateral, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Should be.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because the legths of a square all all the same.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the tringle is the same ASSUMING it cuts the square in half.

geerky42 (geerky42):

take a close look at this: |dw:1350959056210:dw| notice that:|dw:1350959120732:dw|\[\tan \theta = \frac{2x}{x} = 2 \rightarrow \theta = \tan^{-1}(2) = 63.434\]so it's NOT equilateral triangle... so how can i solve this problem?
