x+1/5=x-1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cancel x on both sides: 1/5 = -1/2. No solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

These are proportions.. Im supposed to be using cross products.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get a decimal... /:

OpenStudy (goformit100):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\Large \frac{x+1}{5}={x-1\over2}\] Be more specific next time. Use parenthesis or the equation editor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Multiply both sides by \(5\cdot2\).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, then you should have typed it like: (x+1)/5 = (x-1)/2. Careful with parentheses usage. So, when you cross-multiply (not cross product - that's a vector term), you get: \[ \dfrac {x+1}{5} = \dfrac {x-1}{2} \rightarrow 2(x+1) = 5(x-1) \rightarrow 2x + 2 = 5x - 5 \rightarrow 3x = -7, \] so you're right. It's a decimal. @goformit100 Spamming != Good. ;) @JessicaO Remember what muntoo and I said - be specific. ;)

OpenStudy (goformit100):

i am not spamming

Thank y'all. :)
