Estimate 244.23 ÷ 49.17 by using compatible numbers ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Compatible numbers means numbers that make the division easy... easy enough you can probably do it in your head vs. long division. The way I think of it is to start by thinking to myself, "It would make the problem a LOT easier if only..." and then think how could use nearby numbers to make the division easier. In this problem, wouldn't it be much easier if you had been given 250 ÷ 50 ? So those "compatible" numbers act as good estimates for the real numbers, allowing you to estimate the answer using much easier mental division.

Juan traveled 38 miles from home to New Haven, and then 574 miles from New Haven to Ridgeville. Use front end estimation to estimate the miles he traveled on his trip. can you help with this also

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I didn't know the term "front end estimation" until just now, but when I looked it up, it meant you just keep the first digit of each number. So instead of: 38 you use 30 + 574 + 500 ------ ----- 612 530 This always gives you a lower sum than the real sum, but again, it's just an estimate.

none of those are my choices
