Name a tangent in circle O. A. line segment CE B. line GD C. line AB D. line segment BO

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was thinking either A or D .

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Are there any lines where it only touches the circle at EXACTLY ONE point ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'd have to say A. CE because it is touching the circle at exactly one point .

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

look again, points C and E are on the circle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that leaves me with BO .

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you need to find a line where it is a) outside of the circle b) only one point on this line is touching the circle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

BO is a radius so yes it's touching the circle at one point...BUT...if you extend BO infinitely in both directions, it will touch the circle twice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hm , true ! that will only leave me with two options now !

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, so you at least know those two choices (A and D) are out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok , well looking at AB , considering that the question says "Name a tangent in Circle O" , it seems to me that AB isn't IN circle o at all , but looking at GD it is in circle o .

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

GD is in the circle, so it's a chord (which means it can't be a tangent) so AB has to be the tangent (and it turns out that it definitely is a tangent since it touches the circle at point B only)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH ! i see now !! awesome , i can definitely see that now !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you by the way (:

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the general rule is this if you have a line and a circle, then either a) this line a chord b) this line is a tangent c) the line doesn't intersect/touch or isn't in the circle at all Only one option at a time applies (ie you can't have option a) and b) happening at the same time)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
