Solve the following equations for all solutions of x sec^2x-2tanx=4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sec^2 = 1 + Tan^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So do I substitute that in for sec^2? Like...tan^2-2tanx=3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup, now u have a quadratic in Tan....(let Tan = x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So should I make it equal zero by taking away 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes...it factors easily, then just solve it like any normal equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I came up with 3,-1??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand....?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I factor out as (tan-3)(tan+1)=0?? Am I on the right track?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And then if I say... tan-3=0 tan+1=0 I get 3,-1? Is that correct?
