Which is NOT true of the electron transport chain? A. It is a series of molecules in the mitochondrion that receive high-energy B. The electrons travel down the chain and produce ATP along the way. C. A small amount of ATP is formed as electrons travel down the chain. D. A large amount of ATP is formed as electrons travel down the chain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well that's tough. The electron transport chain does not in fact produce any ATP itself. What it does is generate an imbalance of H+ across the mitochondrion inner membrane, and then ATPsynthase uses this electrochemical gradient to produce ATP. So the production of ATP is coupled to the electron transport chain, but is not technically part of it at all. I'm really not sure what answer is wanted here.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

i'm guessing the answer they're looking for is C because ETC produces a relatively large amount of ATP.. but still ambiguous question is ambiguous
