I can see that the normal formula for a logarithm is Log b (x) = n. However, the problem I have before me is Log(a) = 5. To me it seems like there's something missing. Is the "a" in my problem the BASE or the EXPONENT????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the base is not written explicitly, then it is always either e or 10. Most of the time if it's meant to be e the notation will be "ln" and if it's meant to be 10 it will be "log". So in this case I suspect you've got a common log, base 10, and a = 10^5.
