A treasure map is drawn to a scale of 2 inches = 3 miles. On the map, the distance between Point A and X-marks-the-spot is 9 1/2 inches. How many actual miles does this represent.

This is a ratio problem 2 inches on the map equals 3 miles in real life. So 4 inches on the map would be 6 miles, 6 inches would be 9 miles, etc. How far is 9 1/2 inches in real life? You can set it up as a ratio: real life / map = 3 miles / 2 inches = x miles / 9.5 inches 3/2 = x/9.5
