If you're having trouble with metres/centimetres, etc, there really is no "easy" way out. You need to just memorize that there are 100cm per m, 1000m per km, etc. It's a bit easier if you know French, since some of the prefixes are similar to French words.

Centi = cent = 100
Milli = mille = 1000
