Can someone please help me understand? :) Subtract. (8f2 - 3f - 4) - (f2 - 2) Answers: 7f2 - 3f - 6 7f2 - 3f - 2 7f2 - 6 7f2 - 2

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

Do u knw what r like terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

hmm no. Terms containing similar variables are like terms. For example x and 2x are like terms. Similarly 4x^2 and 7x^2 are like terms. In the same way a^3 and 6a^3 are like terms. Getting this @InsanelyChaotic?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How are x and 2x similar?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

im not sure how it is today, but when i was back in the 2nd grade learning how to add and subtract, we lined things up in a vertical format, not this side by side format.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how are 1 apple and 2 apples similar?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How are any of those like terms for that matter.

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

By the aspect that they both contain the x.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(8f2 - 3f - 4) - (f2 - 2) line up like terms (8f2 - 3f - 4) - ( f2 - 2) and do the subtraction column by column 8f2 - 3f - 4 - f2 -(-2) -------------

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you @ajprincess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, -4- (-2)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

equals -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea..its -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you but one more question pertaining to this problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Couldn't it either be B or D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or do you have to add the "3f" into the factor?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

B or D would be a good way to narrow it down, but only one of them is correct

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the 3f never gets touched, so it has to be a part of the finished results

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I gather that :) my question is in most circumstances, is it going to be the problem with the number that's also in the question? if that makes sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhhhhhhh @amistre64

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you everyone :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck ;)

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

welcome:)
