x-5y=-4, x+8y=-4

There are several ways to solve this: 1. Substitution -x + 5y= -4 5y+4=x x=5y+4...(1) that's our first equation 4x + 3y = 16 substitute our first equation 4(5y+4) + 3y = 16 20y + 16 + 3y = 16 23y=0 y=0 change y in our first equation with the value x=5y+4 x=5(0) + 4 x=4 That way, we get: x=4 y=0 2. Elimination -x + 5y = -4 4x + 3y = 16 First, multiply the first equation by 4, in order to produce 4x -x + 5y = -4------|x4| 4x + 3y = 16----|x1| -4x+20y= -16 4x + 3y = 16 -------------------- + (to eliminate the x, you have to add them) 23y=0 y=0 then change the y in one of the equations: 4x + 3(0) = 16 4x=16 x=4 That way, you get x=4 and y=0
