why is the sky blue?

basically, b/c gas molecules scatter the light coming from the sun, blue light has a shorter wavelength so it is scatter more than other wavelengths of light.

The scattering is actually done by large groups of molecules acting together. An isolated molecule is by itself too small to scatter visible light.
