why is the sky blue?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

basically, b/c gas molecules scatter the light coming from the sun, blue light has a shorter wavelength so it is scatter more than other wavelengths of light. http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/blue-sky/

thank you!

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no prob!

The scattering is actually done by large groups of molecules acting together. An isolated molecule is by itself too small to scatter visible light.
