what is an absolute value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

absolute value is when a number is in bars EX. |24| if it is a negative number like |-24| the bars take away anything that changes the numbers value. so |-24| = 24

Absolute value means only how far a number is from zero, for example: "6" is 6 away from zero, and "-6" is also 6 away from zero. So the absolute value of 6 is 6, and the absolute value of -6 is also 6. Does this make sense?
