OpenStudy (mazehaq):

What are four primary areas of responsibility that an individual should feel obligated to take care of in his or her society and why are these four the most important? Here are some readings I can use. • “Individualism and the Intellectuals” by Emile Durkheim • “Of Our Spiritual Strivings” by W.E.B. Du Bois • “The Individual and the Pattern of Culture” by Ruth Benedict • “The Individual in the Chains of Illusion” by Erich Fromm • “Of the Natural Progress of Opulence” by Adam Smith • “The Communist Manifesto” by Karl Marx • “The Gospel of Wealth” by Andrew Carnegie

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the communist manifesto is good since it exposes the social ills of capitalism and it pushes for an egalitarian society

OpenStudy (anonymous):

durkheim is a douchebag functionalist/structuralist so i dont like him

OpenStudy (mazehaq):

Hm, but how would I convert Marx's views to responsibilities a society can benefit on since we (Americans) focus more upon Adam Smith's views about capitalism.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well we can use his theory as sort of a provision to curb capitalism from overexerting itself on society like sort of a tool to use to check the capitalists system america also has elements of socialism in it such as welfare and unemployment checks

OpenStudy (mazehaq):

Ugh, I just can't come up with an intro :/
