What's a word I could use to describe this situation: Living in slavery but not wanting to leave because your given food and shelter?

okay so to be more clear this is on fredrick douglass and I'm trying to get a word that would match the situation a slave felt when they thought about running away because they didn't know where to run to and therefore thought it better to at least be somewhere where they are fed and have shelter rather than try runing away which could lead to their death.
