its a dissociative disorder in which two or more distinct personalities coexist within one and the same individual.

The causes of MPD explained by different psychologist differs.most of the psychologist say that mpd causes from the abuse from childhood,or any other accidents that took place in past. 
some times multiple personalities are not different personalities with completely dissimilar ideation,but rather one personality at two state of his/her life..
usually secondary personalities/or other personalities tries to express the feelings that they are unable to express because of some boundaries or social restrictions.
