well there was a lot known about DNA when he confirmed that the nucleus contains the genetic information, DNA, and controls development of the cell and the organism... it could go as far as Mendel, proposing that there is was material within the plant that could be manipulated to modify it's phenotype (the way it looks), or maybe structural information (watson n crick's double helix).
