An introduction should contain a thesis statement--that is, a sentence that presents your main argument without going into it in detail. It should be catching (ie not boring), and set up your paper in a way that someone who doesn't know the book/article/research you're working on can understand. The one thing you don't want to do is summarize a) your entire paper, and b) the book/article in question.
