Keep the compass width greater than AO and draw an arc, then decrease the compass width to draw another arc from B. Keep the compass width less than AO and draw an arc from A, then increase the compass width to draw another arc from B. Set the compass width equal to AO and find a point P by intersecting the arcs drawn from O and B.

You would do the first selection because you want the distances from P to A and P to B to be equal.
