Solve the equation. |k + 7| = 3

hartnn (hartnn):

use this : |a|=b then a=b or a=-b so what about |k+7| = 3 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're suppost to find what your awnser is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's the question.

hartnn (hartnn):

i am supposed to make u understand how to solve it, you are supposed to actually solve it.... do u wanna understand ? or just want an answer ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would like to understand.

hartnn (hartnn):

great! so u know what absolute value means ? |...| what is |-4|=?

hartnn (hartnn):

absolute sign |.....| makes negative *minus* go away! so |-4|=4 |any negative number|= positive number. got this ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah.

hartnn (hartnn):

so when i write |a|= 4 it can either be a=4 or a=-4 because |4|=4 and |-4|=4 ok ? thats why i wrote |a|=b then a=b or a=-b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the soultion set would be -4 and postivite 4?

hartnn (hartnn):

for this |k + 7| = 3 ? no.

hartnn (hartnn):

for |k + 7| = 3 u need to solve these 2 equations k + 7 = 3 or k+7=-3
