| x + 1/2 | = –5 solve the equation? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I fixed it now.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The absolute value of a number represents the distance that number is from 0 on the number line ex: |5| = 5 because 5 is 5 units away from 0 |-22| = 22 because -22 is 22 units away from 0 So the absolute value of any number is NEVER negative because a negative distance doesn't make any sense.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Using what I just said, does | x + 1/2 | = –5 make any sense at all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|a|=\[\sqrt{a^2}\]
