Solve the equation. Check the solution. (Equation posted)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ -4 }{x+1 } = \frac{ -1 }{ x+5 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -1/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. -19/4 B.1/3 C. -19/3 D.2 .... -1/3 isn't an option

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cross multiply : -4(x+5) =-1(x+1) distribute and solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since the upper part is 4 times the upper part of the other, the lower part must obey the same rule, so 4(x+1)=x+5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know. everytime I do this i get 1/3. so, yeah.
