Joining the League of Nations was the provision that brought opposition, particularly within the Senate, against the treaty. A number of opponents believed that the requirement to go to war with any nation that threatened an ally within the League would pull them into another foreign conflict. As a result, the United States wasn't one of the signatures on the Treaty. They signed a separate one instead.
