I think you're thinking in the right direction, but you made a mistake. Notice that triangle DEF is smaller than ABC... it would be unlikely that side EF would be longer than side BC.

The ratio of sides between the two triangles is the same for all three pairs of sides. So like side AB = 6 and DE = 4, the ratio of AB to DE is 6/4. So that's the same ratio as between side BC and side EF. Side BC is 12, so the ratio of with side EF is 12/EF.... and that needs to equal 6/4.
