OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

Scenario 1: Scientists have developed genetically engineered plants that are pest-resistant. By adding genes to the plant’s DNA, they become toxic to insects (but not to plants or animals). This means that these plants may not need to be sprayed with pesticides to ward off the insects. Would you be willing to eat these genetically altered crops? Explain your answer. What are some possible impacts (positive or negative) of this genetically engineered plant on the environment, society, and individuals?

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

I only really need an answer on question 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would be willing to eat them because they have been approved for human consumption . Environmental concerns could be that g.m crops If we add a gene which makes a crop resistant to a herbicide, and the added genes migrate to the wild population of the plant or a wild relative, will it create a resistant weed with a selection advantage? If we make a crop genetically resistant to an insect pest, what effect will it have on other species other species along the food chain of the local ecology? Society is effected by the environment and people worry so thats an angle there and as for individuals well they just need yo choose to eat them or not , judged on the evidence .

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

how would the genes migrate? cross-pollination or whatever that's called?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You got it .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Theres also the long term risk of the plants evolving into new strains that can spread to the wild I guess , but that's much lesss likley then your sugestion .
