6 − x = 5x + 30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I add x by itself on the left side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6-30=5x+x -24=6x x=-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did 30 go to the left?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[6-x=5x+30\] -x is also written as -1x, so; \[6-1x=5x+30\] Now add 1x to both sides; \[6-1x+1x=5x+30+1x\] Which turns to; \[6=6x+30\] Now we will subtract 30 from both sides; \[6-30=6x+30-30\] Which turns to; \[-24=6x\] Next we will divide both sides by 6 to get x alone; \[\frac{ -24 }{ 6 }=\frac{ 6x }{ 6 }\] \[-4=x\]or\[x=-4\]
