It says to simplify f(x) to make it easier, but that just seems so tedious!

You don't have to simplify first, but if you don't, you'll have the chain rule, product rule (with 3 terms) then chain chain chain.. it'll be a bit of a mess :) It's worth it to apply some log rules hehe
