How would you modernize Hamlet using: Overview Setting Costuming Characters Suggested Actors

Well, you could start with the easy, fun stuff: from today's actors and actresses, who would you cast as lead characters--and how would that affect the characters? For example, you'd get a different Hamlet if you cast Brad Pitt than if you cast Samuel L. Jackson. Next, costumes: is Hamlet a hipster or a bro? Those are obvious simplifications, but they're first steps to developing modern characters. Next, where would you set the action that's a modern environment? Where would you see this happening today? You could go for the obvious power dynamics and set it in the White House, or take it with a grain of salt and make Hamlet the heir and inheritor of a pizzeria. Finally, the combination of all these modern elements will allow you to think about the issues in the play under a different light--same conflict, different social/political context.
