the legend of a map says that .5 inches is equal to 10 miles on a map. if a highway on a map is 1.75 inches long, how long is the actual highway

Try setting up a proportion.

inches : miles :: 0.5 : 10

Think, how many .5 inches are in 1.75 inches ? Lets call this x. Because .5 is equal to 10 miles on the legend ,... take x and multiply it by 10.
