Choose two trinomials from the list below to factor. Using complete sentences, explain how to factor each one. Be sure that the final factorization (or "answer") is a part of your explanation. 2x2 + 13x + 15 2x2 + 27x + 13 5x2 − 2x − 7 10x2 − 7x − 3 8x2 − 11x + 3
I'll do one to explain, if you need help still just ask. Factoring : Okay so lets choose, 5x2-2x-7 First multiply 5 by -7 to get -35. Now find some factors of -35 that subtract to 2 (talking about that 2 in the center*) It just so happens that we can use 5, and -7 So, 5x2+5x-7x-7 See how that is the same as the original equation? just subtract the 7x from 5x, and you get back to -2x. 5x2-2x-7 is back to the original. :] Skipping some unnecessary steps, we get (5x+5)(x-7) , See where those terms are from? the 5 is from the original equation, that we pulled and multiplied with -7. And positive 5 and negative 7 were our numbers that subtract to 2 and multiply to -35.
If you FOIL (5x+5)(x-7) You get the original equation. If you do not know how to foil, it's a quick google search under mathematical terms.
