Now that you have a good grasp of these poetic elements, we are ready to analyze two poems—one from each exhibit! You may choose to use the poems you read and enjoyed at the beginning of our lesson, or you may choose new poems. Choose one poem from Exhibit A and one from Exhibit B for your analysis.

Use this Graphic Organizer to help guide you through your analysis so that you can better understand these two poems. This tool will be very helpful to you when you go to complete your assignment. You may copy and paste this organizer, print it and write directly on it, or create your own with the same criteria.

When you first wandered the halls of our two exhibits, you responded with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down to the different poems you read. After you dig deeper and choose two poems to "break down," we will pull our analysis together and share our response in the format of a professional letter.

Assessment Instructions

You have just taken on a new job as editor in chief of a widely read magazine. It is National Poetry Month, and poets are flooding your in-box with submissions. You have to be picky and choose just the right one to feature for your readers' enjoyment and enlightenment.

First, choose your magazine. Keep in mind the subject matter that would be covered in such a magazine and the type of readers you have.

Next, refer to your graphic organizer. Choose one of the two poems you analyzed as the one that has been submitted to your magazine for consideration. As editor in chief, would you accept or reject this poem and what would your reasons be?

Once you have made your decision, you need to write a letter to the poet to notify him or her of your choice. Review Letter Formatting for a refresher on the format of a professional letter. Due to privacy issues, please do not include your actual home address, rather use a fictitious address.
