Since all knowledge is intertwined, new knowledge in one area impacts all others.  For example, a new understanding in quantum physics might impact chemistry, which impacts pharmaceuticals, geography, and nutrition.  Those, in turn, affect many other fields.

So, an amended plate tectonics theory will have an impact on many other fields of study.
