Convert the angle 57°29'38" to decimal degrees and round to the nearest hundredth of a degree.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Hint: there are 60 minutes in a degree, so 1 degree = 60 minutes Also, there are 60 seconds in a minute, or 60*60 = 3600 seconds in a degree. This means 1 degree = 3600 seconds

@jim_thompson5910 I don't understand

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

57°29'38" 57° + 29' + 38" 57 + 29/60 + 38/3600 ... Use the conversion factors I described above 57 + 0.483333 + 0.0105555 57.4938885 57.49 So 57°29'38" is roughly 57.49°

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

One thing to notice: 30 minutes is half a degree, so 29 minutes is pretty close to that, which explains why the decimal part of the answer is close to 0.5
