Solving by substituting means you should substitute some form of the first equation into the 2nd equation... to get it ready for substitution, you need to rearrange Equation # 1 to solve for the x or the y variable... get it all alone.

So, maybe you would want to solve for y.... x+y = 6 --->>> y = -x + 6

then take the next step by substituting that expression for "y" in place of the "y" variable in Equation # 2.... then simplify, and solve for x.
