In 2000, Florida was neither overwhelmingly in support of Bush or Gore, nor was it necessarily the first to submit election results. But it is a swing state and the votes were eventually challenged by concerns in Gore's camp leading to an eventual recount in a number of counties, especially in view of how close the race was -- whoever won Florida would win the election at that point. Everyone's eyes were on the state well after the polls had closed. In the end, Bush won the state by an amazingly slim margin of only several hundred votes.
