do you know the quadratic formula?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

first make it a little easier by dividing through by 2 2x^2 - 3x - 5 = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x = \frac{ -b \pm \sqrt{b ^{2}- 4ac} }{ 2a }\]Use the quadratic formula and notice that there is a "+-" sign, so you will (potentially) get 2 answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This formula is for solving equations of the ax^2 + bx + c = 0, and your equation is already in that form, so just substitute and simplify.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good hints up there... now all ya gotta do is identify your a, b, c in your equation \(\large 2x^2-3x-5=0 \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(\large ax^2+bx+c=0 \) \(\large 2x^2-3x-5=0 \) can you identify them now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how does it look when it's all plugged in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do YOU think it looks when it's all plugged in? Can you write the substitutions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the answer 5/2 or -1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd like to write out the substitutions for you, but that is such a fundamentally simple operation, that if I or any other tutor did so, it would just be giving you the answer. The directive in this website is for the student to be engaged in the problem-solving effort by active participation and active learning. Otherwise, just giving you an answer does you no good and only incurs warnings given at this site. Perhaps you can get someone on your side to show you how to operate your laptop a little better, then we could go forward.
