Application: I need help writing a scientific notation for a word problem. Can anyone help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The word problem is: One light year is about 5.87 x 10^12 miles. Use scientific notation to express this distance in feet. {Hint: 5,280 feet = 1 mile}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(5.87x10^12 miles)(5280 feet/mile) 30993.6x10^12 feet 3.09936x10^4x10^12 3.09936x10^16 alternatively: count the number of times the decimal point must move such way that there will be only one digit left on its left side. if you move going to the left, your count will be the 10's exponent (or to be added to the existing exponent). if to the right, the count will still be the 10's exponent but in negative (or to be subtracted from the existing exponent).
