Can somebody explain what dy/dx is when it comes to derivatives containing two variables?

Just in Calculus BC we're evaluating related rates and I never truly understood the concept of derivatives in terms of dy/dx other than knowing it's the derivative of y in relation to x but I can definitely find an example from my book. One second.
