Calculus question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x)=e^(-mx) + 3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For a particular value of m, the tangent of the graph y = f(x) at x = -6 passes through the origin. Find this value of m

OpenStudy (ghazi):

differentiate it and put dy/dx=0 at x=6 you will get value of m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why do we have to put dy/dx = 0, how can we assume gradient of the tangent is 0?

OpenStudy (ghazi):

well you can find it other way too your gradient needs to be passing through (0,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I found m=0, is it correct

OpenStudy (ghazi):

yes , its correct then only its tangent will pass through origin cuz you will get tangent as dy/dx=3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is m=1/6 also correct?

OpenStudy (ghazi):

no, cuz then tangent will not pass through origin
