There were two main political parties in Lincoln's time: the Democrats and the Republicans. Lincoln was a Republican. Why do you think the Chicago Times might not be a Republican newspaper?

Because it was founded with the backing of Stephen Douglas, a Democrat, and Lincoln's ultimate opponent in the election of 1860. In fact, the Chicago Times was a reservoir of Copperhead sentiment, and so vilified Lincoln and the cause of the Union that the paper was suppressed in 1863 by Union General Ambrose Burnside.
