WXY is a right triangle. A. True. B. False. (Picture below.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A.True

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thaaaaankss! :D

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

False, since the square of the hypotenuse is not equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. From the Pythagorean Theorem: \[34 ≠ 18 + 18 = 36\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mhm.. welcome:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, false or true then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True, because it has a right angle. Like a 'L' shape.. It has 18 and 18 angles

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

The Pythagorean Theorem states that the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Since this is not the case with this triangle, it must not be a right triangle, since the theorem holds for all right triangles.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait? Yes it is.. o.o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is a right triangle! o.o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh wait.. :3 NO it's not. :) Your are correct, my bad..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Aaaaaah. Yep, t'was false. Thanks guys! (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. I just scanned the photo and saw the right angle not a right triangle. :P

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

Taking the Pythagorean Theorem: \[hypoenuse^2 = 2 \times sides^2\] And our specific example: \[2 \times \sqrt{18}^2 = 2 \times 18 = 36\] This is not equal to \[\sqrt{34}^2 = 34\] Therefore, this is not a right triangle, it just greatly resembles one.
