A manufacturer of bird feeders cuts spacers from a tube that is 6 1/9 inches long. How many spacers can be cut from the tube if each spacer must be 5/9 inch thick? estimated? exact?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just divided it and got 11, that work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the estimate or the exact?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exact

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you get the estimate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that I'm not too sure of. just try to guess it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you convert to decimals, the tube comes to 6.111... and the spacers to .5556 and then just say thats about 6 and .5, so for every whole number in the 6 you have about two of the other, so that comes to almost 12. I just came up with that on the spot, there's probably easier ways to est, but that works
