The highest elevation on earth is Mount Everest in Asia. It is approximately 2.9 x 10^4 feet high. If a climber only made it half way up the mountain, how high did he climb? Write the answer in scientific notation.

What is the problem here?

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

If the mountain is 2.9 x 10^4 feet high, what is half that height?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first turn the height into normal form then divide buy two. that will be your answer but know you must put it in scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i got the 2.9 x 10^4 = 29000 right? but then you divide it in half... and then you have to put it in scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and that is where it gets confusing... after you divide it in half..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Don't turn anything into normal form, just divide the 2.9 and keep the rest the same!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok..... thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i believe it would be 1.45 x 10^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What?? No, its still 10^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thats what i though.. ^4 not ^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*thought

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, hit the wrong number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i didnt notice it until then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok
