How do I know what will dissolve into ions? and how do I know what ions they dissolve into?

in a question which asks "which produces the largest amount of dissolved particles per mole of dissolved solute?" the drawn out answer my teacher gave me said shat ethanol (C2H5OH) only dissolved into 1 ion. why is this?

ethanol is a molecular structure, not an ionic structure. If you want something to dissolve into ions, it's got to be put together with ionic charges. Ionic substances are always (ALWAYS) made up of some kind of metal (M+) and some kind of nonmetal (NM-) who "stick together" because of opposite charges. NaCl is ionic CaCl_2 is ionic CH4 is not ionic C2H5OH is not ionic
