A cereal factory has three machines for dispensing cereal into bags. A test is done in which 8 bags are filled by each machine and the bags are weighed. The results in grams:Machine 1: 309, 311.5, 313, 310, 308, 314, 312, 310.5 Machine 2: 310, 309, 314, 311, 309, 314.5, 312.5, 310 Machine 3: 309, 310.5, 313.5, 315.5, 310, 311, 312, 309.5 Which statement is true about the mean output of the three machines?Answer: a. Machine 1 has the highest b. Machine 2 has the highest c. Machine 3 has the highest d. All three machines have the same mean e. Two machines share the highest

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know what is mean output?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no srry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok... a mean output is the average output.. Do you know how to find the averages?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i forget

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok... averege is the = total sum divided by total number consider in your exam you have 2 papers... in one paper you got 40 out of 50 and in othr paper you got 42 out of 50... then using the concept of avrages can you just tell me what is your average mark?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

..... can you just tell me what steps you have done?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i added them all up and divided by how many numbers was there which was 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your method is correct.. but answer need correction here only we have two papers..then how the total number is 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or 91 is the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it 41

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you say how you got 91 and 41 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause the 91 i got by adding the 40 and the 50 and the 42 and the 50 and then dividing it by 2 and i got 91 then i just added the 40 and 42 and divided it by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what you think which is more accurate.... first case you added 4 numbers (which makes total number is 4) second case you added 2 numbers (which makes total number 2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but can we go ahead and get to my question so i can get this done plz

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure.. now how many bags are there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 bags

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that is what your total numbr is.. now what you need to do to find the mean output?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember mean output is the average output..... you need to find the avrage output of each machine.... you have the total number of bags that each machine process and you know each bages weight..now you need to find the average of each machines output separatly and compare the results to obtain answer..any clue... think twice?:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok... what is the machine 1's average output

OpenStudy (anonymous):

310.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how you got it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i added up all the numbers in machine 1 and then i got 2487 then i divided it by 8 and got 310.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly... but i think you missd to add 0.5s... please add and verify your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 350.2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

309+ 311.5+313+310+308+314+312+310.5 =?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it equals to 2488

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you just add them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.. now find average

OpenStudy (anonymous):

311

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup... you got the average output of machine one.... congrads now find the averag output of machine 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2490 before u divide for machine 2 right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so average or mean output of machine 2 is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

311.2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.. can you give 2 decimal digit answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

means after decimal point two more numbers (which incrases the precision of your answer)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

311.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly.... well done...... ... in this case this answer (311.2) is sufficient but it won't b in another case where we require more precision.. ok.... Can you give me the mean out out of machine 3 then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

***mean output of machine 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give two or three digits after decimal point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the third machine has a sum of 2491 before dividing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the mean out put of machine three is 311.375

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.... yess... you got the mean output of alll your machines... now rad the question and tell me what is the correct answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

machine three has the highest because machine 1 only has 311 machine two only has 311.25 and machine three has 311.375

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup.... congratulations again......... averages or mean is ok for you now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also... there are som simple tricks to find mean values... you may study later
